From Court To The Sidelines: Parents Pass The Tradition

For the past 8 years BAM Jam has been a co-ed event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, making it an ideal opportunity to get the whole family involved. The Allen and Sailors families have taken full advantage of this opportunity as both Chris Allen and Leah Sailors compete every year with their families.

For the Allens, Chris’s brother, Corey, comes to town from Spokane to take part in the tournament, and his wife and children also often compete in their respective age groups. With the Sailors, Leah competes on the women’s side and also has children who participate.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Chris and Leah about their BAM Jam experiences and learn more about the basketball families!

How to bracket a tournament

"Trust is built with consistency." --Lincoln Chafee

When brackets are released each summer and spring, we often get the questions, “How were teams seeded?”, “Why does this team get a first round bye?”, “Why is there so much time between games?” and more.

After running 15+ large scale tournaments, we’ve learned a few things about logistics, game mapping and more. At this point in BAM Jam’s history, the teams have played before and keep coming back have learned to trust our judgement and believe we are doing the best we can for their experience.

The 3 week BAM Jam basketball training plan

BAM Jam is just 3 weeks away. For teams that want to go deep in to their brackets, being in shape, both from a stamina and strength perspective, will prove to be very beneficial.
3 week basketball training plan
Adding in high intensity ball handling is a great way to build your strength, endurance and skills.
Here is a simple 3 week workout program that you can do from your home and doesn't require any special equipment other then a pair of shoes and a basketball and the willingness to contribute 2-3 30 minute sessions per week.

Can you "PLAY ALL DAY"?

BAM Jam is about having fun days, playing a great game and doing it with music and entertainment. Which leads us in to this spring's theme "Play All Day".

3 on 3 Basketball As A Development Tool

Obviously, 3 on 3 basketball is a lot of fun. And there are lots of reasons to play. But have you considered how you can use 3 on 3 basketball to develop your all around game for future success?

Here are four ways that 3 on 3 basketball develops players.

Teaches you to react and make quick decisions.
At BAM Jam, games are played to 20 or are done with a 25 minute max per game. That means you don't have a lot of time to mess around. Players that compete each spring and summer have learned out to quickly asses different situations, whether it is identifying a match up advantage, managing possessions toward the end of a game or adjusting to fatigue.
3 on 3 basketball development
In 3 on 3 basketball, players are often isolated, requiring them to develop 1 on 1 skills and the ability to defend on the ball

A look inside scheduling and how Tetris is helping

One of the most frequently asked questions we get at BAM Jam is "When will the tournament schedule be out?"

Typically, the BAM Jam schedules will be out the Thursday before the tournament starts. We post it online and separate it by the bracket type and court.

But the next question is usually "How do you create the schedule?"

BAM Jam and Tetris have a lot in common
Scheduling BAM Jam teams is a bit
like playing a game of Tetris
Scheduling is kind of like a big puzzle with moving pieces and limited space and time.

Think Tetris.

Who you taking?

There is no team hotter in the NBA than the Golden State Warriors. They are on track to take down the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls for most wins in the regular season.

So our most recent poll is simple: if you have to win one game, which team are you taking?

Who is competing at this spring's BAM Jam?

This post was originally posted on February 4, 2015. But since so many people found it interesting, we've reposted with updates.

Last year, BAM Jam really dug in to understand our players better. We've taken a look at our brackets from 2011-2014, conducted a large survey, posted some online polls and reached out to talk with some of our BAM Jam players.

Our hope is that by better understanding who our players are, we will be able to do a better job serving your needs. And we intend to keep this going at our next BAM Jam tournament, presented by Treasure Valley Ford Stores, on March 19-20, 2016 at Capital High School in Boise, Idaho.

As we compiled the information, we thought you might be interested in knowing who you are playing against and who you might be watching. We also included some things that you told us we should consider taking a closer look at.

Players to watch at this summer's BAM Jam

TOP PLAYERS TO WATCH

BAM Jam, presented by Treasure Valley Ford Stores, typically features some of the most talented men's and women's players in the northwest. Thanks to a centralized location with college programs of all sizes located near by, it is no shock that players ranging from community college to the professional level play in the tournament.

There are far too many players to list all of them with details so we've picked out a few highlights and have listed them here.

Coby Karl – Karl is currently listed on the Walking Buckets (6'0 Over Elite) roster along side former Boise State Broncos Rob Heyer and Mark Sanchez and Boise State Assistant Coach John Rillie (who played at Gonzaga and is an Australian native). Karl would be the first NBA player to participate in BAM Jam. Karl played for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2007-08 season and also with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009. This past season he played with the Reno Bighorns in the NBA D-League. With Karl, Rillie and Sanchez the Walking Buckets will have 3 professionals on their squad, the most of any team this tournament.

Matt Bauscher – The “do everything” former Boise State Bronco is rumored to be considering a come back at BAM Jam with Team Muscle Pharm in the Men's 6'0 Over Elite. Bauscher retired from professional basketball this past year after a very successful run in Europe. The Muscle Pharm team lost a key player about 2 weeks ago in Booker Nabors, who blew out his Achilles while competing at the USA Basketball 3 on 3 National Tournament in Colorado Springs. Bauscher would make a nice fill in and will definitely make Muscle Pharm a top contender. The returning 3 players with Muscle Pharm, Chris Allen, Kevin Baker and Craig McGee, were all on last spring and summer's championship team and also did very well at the USA Basketball 3 on 3 National Tournament this past July.

Will Bogan – Bogan was an all state player and state champion at Vallivue High School in Caldwell, Idaho before signing to play with Ole Miss. After graduating in just 3 seasons with the Rebels, Bogan transferred to Valparaiso where he started 62 of 68 games. He is playing for Unlimited Range in the 6'0 Under Elite division.

Enjoy the sun but be aware of the melanoma risks

St. Luke's Men's Health offers helpful
tips on preventing melanoma
Did you know that Idaho consistently ranks among the highest states for melanoma incidence and death rates?

Whether you are playing in the tournament, on the lake or enjoying a back yard BBQ, the sun is always a factor.

Melanoma incidence has more than tripled over the last 30 years. Melanoma is much more common among non-Hispanic whites than people of other races and ethnicities.

Here are a few helpful tips to consider:

The Style of BAM Jam

To quote long time BAM Jam champ Chris Allen, "When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you play good."

Allen would know, having won multiple summer and spring BAM Jam championships in the men's elite divisions.

The way a player dresses for game day says a lot about who they are and how they play.

It's gotta be the shoes (or socks, or...)

While shoes are at the core of a hooper's apparel, they are no longer the the only key element. Today's game goes beyond a player's shoe game. Socks, shorts, shoe laces, tights, shirts, head bands and arm sleeves all play in to the look.

At BAM Jam you will see every brand you can think of in every style imaginable. Latest releases to retro, bright to classic and everything in between from toes to top. It is a great place to test your street ball fashion sense along with your jump shot.
