9 great reasons to be a court monitor

Boise and the Treasure Valley are full of great people, givers really. They donate their time and efforts to make this one of the best communities in the nation. And with all of the great events that this area hosts, we are proud that so many of you have chosen to give back to BAM Jam as court monitors.

Why have so many decided to give back? Well, here are 9 reasons we've come up with that you might consider. We're always looking for great court monitors to be a part of the event. What do you think?
  1. Every Court Monitor receives training prior to the event so they know what to expect and are prepared to have a great time!
  2. Get BBQ Friday night
  3. CM can get their coffee fix Saturday morning from Moxie Java
  4. Pita Pit will provide you with lunch on Saturday
  5. CM get the official BAM Jam Court Monitor shirts with the coveted "Court Monitor" emblazoned across the back
  6. Receive a cool BAM Jam hat
  7. All CM receive shorts from STADIA Clothing, the most stylish athletic ware anywhere
  8. Each CM gets to take home their court's basketball
  9. Build new friendships with the players that play on your court
And of course, underlying all of this is the fact that you would be helping out a cool community event, the Idaho Select Player's Fund and the Boys & Girls Club. More information on being a Court Monitor is available here.

Hoopfest continues to make BAM Jam better

We are back on the road, heading back to Boise from this weekend's Hoopfest. The BAM Jam Boise dotcom won their first game on Sunday but lost the next two games. The team finished third in their bracket.
The video above shows the Nike Center Court during one of our games. The popularity continues to grow. It is so big that the Spokesman-Review even dedicates an entire section of their paper to the event (click here to see it).

The tournament always gives us new ideas to integrate in to BAM Jam each year. Whether it is the Center Court amenities or how they run their half court shootout, Hoopfest continues to make BAM Jam the best tournament in Idaho.

6.25.2011

Hoopfest is underway and Spokane is the beneficiary

We finished up Friday with a volunteer session for checking in the Hoopfest Court Monitors. With nearly 650 Court Monitors registered to work Saturday and Sunday, their team has the check in system completely dialed in from training to getting the monitors their gear to making sure they have everything they need from whistles to sunscreen.

From there we took a quick walk around downtown as the logistics team gets their set up preparation done. It is incredible how the entire town gets behind this tournament. From the city letting Hoopfest store their baskets in city storage, to staging the night before to rearranging the city transit schedule and bus routes, Spokane has completely bought in. They even let them banner the downtown light posts and put up speakers on every street! The city's reward? An estimated $39 million in additional revenue during the weekend generated specifically by Hoopfest.

Saturday, the first official day of Hoopfest couldn't have gone better for the BAM Jam crew. The day started with a ride on their modified city transportation. Normally, a day pass on their transit system costs $3.50. During Hoopfest it is just $1.50 and in 10 minutes you can get all the way downtown.

The first shift starts at 8:00 AM with a volunteer session at the data entry center. The Hoopfest bracketing/tournament results are completely digital. They strive to have all brackets updated within about 10 minutes of the score sheets being turned in. This is quite a challenge with 485 brackets and sheets coming in every 30 minutes. We had 10 volunteers entering game results into their custom made software and were able to keep up. All the results are available online and they added a mobile application this year. Next year they plan to add text messaging as well.

The BAM Jam Boise Dot Com team also did very well. They are competing in the Elite Division and were ranked #2 this year after finishing second last year. Their first two games were on the Nike Center Court and went 2-0 to finish the day. While the offense was OK it was their defense that proved to be most effective. Sunday they open against another Treasure Valley team at 10:00 AM (Pacific Time). If they win their first three games they will be back in the final four. A loss and they'll have to battle through the losers bracket.

Several Treasure Valley teams are still in the hunt for this year's Hoopfest title including Still OC (Keegan Cook), Gates of Hope (Joel Ryman), STADIAdotcom (Ryan McCarthy and Wade Joseph), Wheatland Bank (Cory Violette and Dan Mcfaul) and BodyBuildingdotcom (Booker Nabors) along with BAM Jam Boise dotcom (Matt Bauscher, Clint Hordemann, Jon DeWolfe and Paul Noonan). But the defending champs, Tonicx (David Pendergraft), is still alive and takes on Wheatland Bank first thing Sunday morning.

And of course don't forget that BAM Jam will take place in Boise on August 5-6 where you can see or even compete against some of these same players.

6.24.2011

On the road to Hoopfest

As all 3 on 3 fans and players know, the Spokane Hoopfest is the gold standard of the world's 3 on 3 tournaments. Several of the BAM Jam staff are headed to Spokane this weekend to both play and volunteer at the world's largest 3 on 3 tournament. Our goals are simply to learn more about how to run a great tournament and have a great time.

Some of us are working, some not so much
The trip to Spokane from Boise runs 6-7 hours depending on traffic. Six of us are packed into an Excursion. Our first volunteer shift starts at 4:00 PM to help check in the tournament's court monitors. We are really looking forward to seeing how their system compares to our and if there are some areas that we can make improvements.

On Saturday, our volunteer shift starts at 8:00 AM when we will help them with their data entry stuff. Not really sure what this means exactly, but it will definitely be an experience.

Our first game is at 10:00 AM on Center Court. The competition will be tough but the weather conditions look favorable. Can't wait for an exciting weekend!

6.09.2011

Registration is open!

The 2011 Summer BAM Jam is now open for registration. We look forward to making this the best tournament yet and continuing the Treasure Valley's ability to boast that it hosts the biggest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in Idaho!

Brackets are now available for viewing

Here is a link to brackets. CLICK HERE

For teams that were not able to be placed, an email has been sent to team captains with details.

Remember, team check in is Thursday from 6-9pm at StoneHouse in Boise. They are located at 665 Park Boulevard, Boise, ID 83712 (208) 345-6790. A team representative needs to be there. If you can't be there, please arrange for someone to come in your place.

Emails are being sent out to bracketed teams with details on the team check in, how to make player changes, when the tournament starts, what to do at the event, parking, admissions, etc. Our server is very slow so please be patient (and we mean VERY SLOW!) Based on our initial estimates teams should have their check in emails with their team numbers by 8:30 AM Thursday morning. If you receive multiple emails regarding the same team it is likely because the email listed for your teammates was a duplicate.

If you did not receive an email, please first check your spam or junk folder, as sometimes these email can end up in there.

Update 2:25 AM
At approximately 2:00 AM our email server crashed with only about half the emails going out. We are going to continue to resolve this and get the rest of the emails out. Please know that if your team is listed in your bracket than you are in the tournament and should plan on meeting at StoneHouse Thursday between 6-9pm for team check in.

Here is the email that you would have received (you can look your team number up at check in)

Greetings [your team name would have gone here]

Welcome to the second annual Fast Eddy's Spring BAM Jam. Below is the check
in and schedule information for this Saturday's Fast Eddy's BAM Jam! There
is a lot of info but IT IS IMPORTANT! Please be sure to read this carefully
so that you are aware of the goings on for the event.

Team number: [your team number would have gone here]
You will need this number in order to check your team in prior to the
tournament. Please print this email and bring it with you. [or you can look it up at team check in]

in Boise. Check in is on Thursday, March 10 goes from 6-9pm. TEAM CHECK IN

get you on the floor. Team captains are responsible for distributing
wristbands to their team. It is your responsibility to not lose these
wristbands. Each player on your roster will receive a wristband. Youth teams
(grades 3-8) will be given one extra wristband for a designated coach.
PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR EXTRAS as we will not be able to accommodate you.

If your team captain or a team member is unable to attend, please make
arrangements with someone else to attend in your place. Only 1 team
representative needs to be present at the team check in; the entire team is
not required to be at the team check in.

While the first games will begin at 8:00 AM, the doors will open at
approximately 7:45 AM.

Wristbands - new this spring
Due to safety and security reasons, only players wearing the designated
player wristbands will be allowed on to the Taco Bell Arena main floor. For
youth teams (grades 3-8) you may designate one person as your coach that
will also receive a player wristband (please do not ask for extras). These
wristbands will be given to team captains or a team representative at the
team check in on Thursday night. They will only be issued to players on your
roster. If your team plays in Bronco Gym or on the US Marines courts, your
player wristband will get you in there as well.

If you are not a player you will be able to purchase admission to the event
at Lobby 3 or at the Bronco Gym entrance for $3 (children 7 and under are
free). You will be issued a spectator wristband at that time. The first
3,000 paid spectators will also be able to redeem their wristbands at the
Fast Eddy's convenience store in Meridian for a free 16oz Monster energy
drink! (Must redeem by April 30)

If you are watching games in the Bronco Gym or on the US Marines courts,
your spectator wristbands will get you in there as well.

Brackets
Brackets will be posted online at www.idahoselect.org/brackets.shtml on
Wednesday night. Please note that these brackets are tentative. Updated
brackets will be available at team check in and the official brackets will
be posted at the Jacksons Master Scoreboard located in Lobby 4. NOTE: It is
the team's responsibility to be sure that you are in the correct bracket and
know your correct start time. The brackets are created based on the
information that was submitted. You will also receive an event map with
court locations and your team's t-shirts at team check in.

Brackets for 3-8 graders will have volunteer court monitors to call fouls.
Remember that they are volunteers and will do the best that they can. Please
show the proper respect. For those players that are showing great
sportsmanship you may receive the Idaho Stampede Sportsmanship Award from a
court monitor. They will have something special for you!

Forfeits/Protests
Teams that are more than 5 minutes late for their game may be forfeited. It
is at the court monitor's discretion. Also, if you decide to protest a game
for an illegal roster, you must do so prior to the start of your game.

Bracket Champions Shirts
Please note, if you win your bracket your team will be issued official BAM
Jam Champion Shirts. These shirts are for the team members listed on your
roster only. Coaches are not provided a shirt.

Event Parking
There will be parking in front of Taco Bell Arena for a fee as well as the
parking garage down the street. There is also limited street parking near
the arena. Please keep in mind that there is a lot of construction going on
so you may want to arrive a little early for your games.

At the event
If you need really good and affordable food, My Family Tradition BBQ will be
in the Player's Lounge (near Lobby 4). Their menu (breakfast, lunch and
dinner) is posted on our website under "News" www.bamjamboise.com

Players and spectators can compete in the Jackson & Jackson Insurance
3-Point Challenge through out the day (in between Lobby 1 and Lobby 2). They
are giving out t-shirts and the top shooters will compete at center court
for the championship.

If you are interested in competing in the Wild 101 Slam Dunk Championship,
be sure to sign up at the STADIA booth in Lobby 3. The champion will get
some cool prizes and achieve legendary status like former champs Reggie
Larry and Kelvin Jones (just type their names into YouTube along with BAM
Jam).

Also at the STADIA booth they will be letting anyone spin their prize wheel
for a chance to win free shirts, water bottles, Idaho Stampede tickets and
more. Details are available at www.bamjamboise.com under the "News" link.

If you are injured at the tournament, St. Luke's will be providing trainers
in Taco Bell Arena, Bronco Gym and on the US Marines courts.

Player Changes
If you need to add, delete or change a player you will need to utilize the
Player Change form, available under the "Play" link on the BAM Jam website,
www.bamjamboise.com. There are a lot of teams with only three players listed
so if you want a fourth you need to add them by Thursday (they need to be on
your roster to get a wristband). Please note that player changes need to fit
your division. For example if you are playing in the 6' and under your
replacement/new player needs to be 6' tall or under. If you are on a 7th
grade team your replacement/new player needs to be in 7th grade or younger.
You get the picture. We will be paying special attention to team rosters
this year as our insurance hinges on having accurate rosters.

Volunteers
We are still in search of a few great volunteers to help out at the
tournament. Since you are playing you may not be available but you might
know someone that is. There are tons of benefits to being a court monitor or
usher. Check them all out at www.bamjamboise.com and click on "Volunteers".
Or send an email to jmatsushita@idvsa.org or call him at (208) 371-8242.

Thank you for your participation in Fast Eddy's BAM Jam. Please remember to
always be respectful to your court monitors and other Fast Eddy's BAM Jam
volunteers. They are giving back to the community from the good of their
hearts and deserve your respect at all times.

See you Thursday and at the arena!

Brackets are full

As of yesterday (Monday), all brackets have completely filled. Several brackets actually filled up last Saturday. As we mentioned, there is very limited space at Taco Bell Arena so we filled space on a first come first served basis based on bracket needs. Like last year, there are several teams that did not register in time and will be given a full refund for their teams.

Within the next day (by Wednesday night) all team captains will be receiving an email about the tournament. It will either be an email informing you that your team was not able to be placed and how you will receive your refund OR it will contain information on what bracket you are in, team check in and other important tournament details.

FYI, all brackets are expected to begin at 8:00 AM on Saturday. This does not necessarily mean that you will be playing at 8:00 AM, just that the first games will begin then. Brackets are expected to go until 8:00 PM for those teams that keep winning. Until the brackets are out (probably Wednesday night) we cannot give more detailed information.

For more details on brackets, player changes, team check-in and floor access click here.

Schedule, Team Check In, Player Changes, Arena Floor Access

Captains and teams - here is an update on your brackets and team check in.

Brackets
Tentative brackets are expected to be out late Wednesday evening. These will be close to final but are subject to change. Please look them over and make sure that you are in the correct bracket. These brackets are posted just to make sure you are in the correct bracket, not an opportunity to change your schedule. The tentative brackets will be available at www.idahoselect.org/brackets.shtml.

Team Check In
All team captains are required to be at the team check in on Thursday, March 10 between 6:00-9:00pm at the StoneHouse by The Ram, 665 Park Boulevard, Boise, ID (208) 345-6790. If your team captain cannot make the team check in PLEASE ARRANGE FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO COME IN THEIR PLACE. At check in captains will receive their player wristbands (required to get on to the arena floor), team shirts, updated brackets and other registration items. There will be drink and food specials as well so come with an appetite!

Player Changes
If you need to add or change a player, please use the Player Change Form which you can download in a .pdf by clicking here. Please fill out completely and fax to the number on the form. Please be aware that any team found using an illegal player will be disqualified from the tournament. It may seem severe but our insurance carrier insists!

New this year, players only on the floor
Due to security and safety concerns, this year inside Taco Bell Arena only people wearing their official Player Wristbands will be allowed on the arena floor. Spectators in the arena will need to sit in their designated seating areas. Directions and ushers at the event will help you know where to go. We have been working with the arena staff to insure the safety of all players and spectators for the best event possible!

The Best BBQ Sauce in the Business - At BAM Jam

We are proud to announce that inside this year's Player's Lounge we will be featuring one of the best BBQ caterers in the Northwest, My Family Tradition BBQ!

As you can see from the menu (click on it for a bigger image), they will be offering more than just hot dogs and nachos (though you can still get those too). We were lucky enough to sample some of their food (it's a tough job) and our players and fans are in for a real treat. With a menu that covers breakfast, lunch and dinner plus great snacks like fruit, POWERADE and treats, there is no reason to leave the arena. They will take cash and credit cards.

What really makes the food is the sauce. My Family Tradition (www.mftbbq.com) has basically perfected BBQ sauce in multiple flavors and levels of hotness. It's made from scratch and you can taste why it is a family tradition.

Be sure to stop by the Player's Lounge at BAM Jam. And remember, if you want to get your team registered, the deadline is March 5.

Increase your vertical and win the Wild 101 Slam Dunk Championship

Here's a great article by Brock Christopher (Accolade Athletics) on how to increase your vertical jump. It includes some of the science behind building your vertical along with drills and video to show you how. Who knows? With enough work maybe you will be the next Wild 101 Slam Dunk Champion!

Here is a link to the article, posted in the Los Angeles Examiner.

Win $50 off your registration this Thursday, February 3

On Thursday, February 3 at 1:45pm (Mountain Time) we will be giving away a $50 promo code off of your team's registration. Log on to the BAM Jam Basketball Facebook page, be the first to answer a simple trivia question and you can get $50 off of your team's registration!

Click here to visit the Facebook page

The trivia question is going to revolve around last year's Fast Eddy's Spring BAM Jam and the various champions (teams, slam dunk contest and Jackson & Jackson 3-point Challenge). We promise it won't be hard but you have to be on our Facebook page at the right time to win. Here's a link to a web page to give you a head start.

The $50 promo code must be used during the 2011 Fast Eddy's Spring BAM Jam on March 12 and cannot be applied to teams already registered. It cannot be used for any other event or with any other offer. The promo code may not be exchanged for cash or other considerations.

Good luck!

Four tips from the defending champion

This spring, the Fast Eddy's BAM Jam will again feature the Jackson & Jackson Insurance 3-point Challenge. Anyone can enter to win and it's always a lot of fun.

But we wanted to give our loyal readers an edge, something that might help them when they are out there shooting for the title.

Defending 3-point champion Craig Spjute shared a few tips on how he was able to win the challenge at last summer's BAM Jam as well as the state's 3-point competition as a senior at Borah High School.

Spjute at BAM Jam
Tip #1 Believe - "You have to think you are the best to be the best. Many may see this as cocky but I see it as confidence."

Tip #2 Expect Success - "It's BAM Jam so yes, it's a big deal...but not a big enough deal to freak out. Just go out there and shoot...but expect to win."

Tip #3 Don't Rush! - "You will make more shots if you relax and take an extra half second to gather yourself, as opposed to shooting as many as possible with bad form."

Tip #4 Love the crowd - "Thrive off them when they cheer! It's exciting!!"

There you have it. Everything you need to know about winning the competition. But don't start engraving your name on that trophy just yet. We suspect Craig may be back to defend his title!

Two tips for 3-on-3 success

Here are a couple of tips on making the most of your BAM Jam experience.

First tip: Find your mismatches (or create them). A lot of 3 on 3 is actually 1 on 1 so you want to take advantage of any mismatches you can exploit. Got a big guarded by a small? Get them the ball inside. Got a quicker guard being defended by a slower player? Get them the ball on the outside and give them room to work.

But what about creating mismatches? Obviously most teams are going to just give you great match ups all day. One way to create potential advantages is by running a simple pick and roll. Bring your big man out to the top for a high on ball screen and watch what the defense does. If they switch, you should now have a big guarding a small on the wing and your big can roll to the basket with a smaller player on them. The great thing about 3 on 3 is that there is very little help side defense so you can usually get an edge. But be quick. The best teams read a defense before the ball is checked and can make adjustments in a matter of seconds during a possession.

Second tip: Go long. In BAM Jam, like a lot of pick up games, 3's are worth 2 and 2's are worth 1. That means you are getting more value out of your 3-point field goals than you normally would. So make sure you take advantage...if you have the shooters. Especially inside the Borah Sports Complex where there is no wind or rain or sun in your eyes. But don't shoot yourself out of games. Some teams become to reliant on the 3-pointer. Remember, a MISSED 3-pointer is always worth 0.

Fast Eddy's Spring BAM Jam is March 17-18, 2012 at the Borah Sports Complex in Boise. Registration is now open.
