From Court To The Sidelines: Parents Pass The Tradition

For the past 8 years BAM Jam has been a co-ed event that welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, making it an ideal opportunity to get the whole family involved. The Allen and Sailors families have taken full advantage of this opportunity as both Chris Allen and Leah Sailors compete every year with their families.

For the Allens, Chris’s brother, Corey, comes to town from Spokane to take part in the tournament, and his wife and children also often compete in their respective age groups. With the Sailors, Leah competes on the women’s side and also has children who participate.

We had the pleasure of speaking with Chris and Leah about their BAM Jam experiences and learn more about the basketball families!

How to bracket a tournament

When brackets are released each summer and spring, we often get the questions, “How were teams seeded?”, “Why does this team get a first round bye?”, “Why is there so much time between games?” and more. 

After running 15+ large scale tournaments, we’ve learned a few things about logistics, game mapping and more. At this point in BAM Jam’s history, the teams have played before and keep coming back have learned to trust our judgement and believe we are doing the best we can for their experience.

The 3 week BAM Jam basketball training plan

BAM Jam is just 3 weeks away. For teams that want to go deep in to their brackets, being in shape, both from a stamina and strength perspective, will prove to be very beneficial.

Adding in high intensity ball handling is a great way to build your strength, endurance and skills.

Here is a simple 3 week workout program that you can do from your home and doesn't require any special equipment other then a pair of shoes and a basketball and the willingness to contribute 2-3 30 minute sessions per week.

BAM Jam is about having fun days, playing a great game and doing it with music and entertainment. Which leads us in to this spring's theme "Play All Day".

3 on 3 Basketball As A Development Tool

Obviously, 3 on 3 basketball is a lot of fun. And there are lots of reasons to play. But have you considered how you can use 3 on 3 basketball to develop your all around game for future success?

Here are four ways that 3 on 3 basketball develops players.

Teaches you to react and make quick decisions. 

At BAM Jam, games are played to 20 or are done with a 25 minute max per game. That means you don't have a lot of time to mess around. Players that compete each spring and summer have learned out to quickly asses different situations, whether it is identifying a match up advantage, managing possessions toward the end of a game or adjusting to fatigue.

In 3 on 3 basketball, players are often isolated, requiring them to develop 1 on 1 skills and the ability to defend on the ball

So, you wanna win BAM Jam? With four players on your team, each player has a chance to fill a role. 

There are a lot of ways to put together your team but here is a balanced approach. Which player are you? Do you know any of these players? Get any four of them and your team is set.

A look inside scheduling and how Tetris is helping

One of the most frequently asked questions we get at BAM Jam is "When will the tournament schedule be out?"

Typically, the BAM Jam schedules will be out the Thursday before the tournament starts. We post it online and separate it by the bracket type and court.

But the next question is usually "How do you create the schedule?"

Who is competing at this spring's BAM Jam?

This post was originally posted on February 4, 2015. But since so many people found it interesting, we've reposted with updates. 

Last year, BAM Jam really dug in to understand our players better. We've taken a look at our brackets from 2011-2014, conducted a large survey, posted some online polls and reached out to talk with some of our BAM Jam players.

Our hope is that by better understanding who our players are, we will be able to do a better job serving your needs. And we intend to keep this going at our next BAM Jam tournament, presented by Treasure Valley Ford Stores, on March 19-20, 2016 at Capital High School in Boise, Idaho.

As we compiled the information, we thought you might be interested in knowing who you are playing against and who you might be watching. We also included some things that you told us we should consider taking a closer look at.
